Colorado – Bucket List item – Ziplining in the mountains

Last weekend my husband, daughter and grandson went to Colorado. Brenton’s first time in the mountain’s; kind of his last woo-raw before starting WSU soon.

Jennifer hadn’t been to CO but twice before and different places each time. Once for a family reunion in Coaldale, CO where we had a ball; she rode horseback but got so sunburned that she didn’t get to go on the White Water Rafting trip with us. Hundreds of hummingbirds were around us all the time. Her twin brother found out he liked rhubarb and strawberry pie, and proceeded to eat it every night. It was down in a valley and we had the Colorado River right behind our cabins where my father would fish every day.

This is their trip to Colorado….. I hope they were stopped when they took this photo. I think they had stopped for lunch in Colby.

Brenton’s first time in Colorado…. so he and his mom had to jump for joy.

Then they got to Estes Park where they would go on the ATV trip. What is with the jumping? ha

The guide let them get out and walk around so it wasn’t like they were stuck in the ATV.

He took a photo of all of them. You can see my grandson is getting to be a tall guy. He turns 18 this month. He is much taller than grandpa and his mom. His great-grandpa would be so proud of him.

Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO; there are haunted tours of this hotel, but after our last adventure to Wilson, KS by daughter said NO, thank you.

Note Brenton on both sides of this photo – the guide showed my daughter how to capture that. Pretty cool. I will have to try it sometime.

2015-07-28 17.49.10

Leaving Estes Park, they headed back to Idaho Springs, CO. Now it is time to rest and get ready to Zip Line tomorrow.

The first night they ate at The Cheesecake Factory, the second night at the California Pizza Company. (So jealous, as I stayed home to care for our doggies.)

Bob checking out how high they are. He doesn’t like heights.

2015-07-27 19.11.50

All geared up and ready to Zip Line. There were six different zip lines they got to go one.

And Jennifer coming down.

They LOVED it, after the worry about the height there were no problems after the first ride they were ready to hit all of them and did. Bob even said he might have done the Bunging Jump had they had time. What will be next jumping out of an airplane?

Haunted Hotel Bucket List

My daughter has been starting to check off items on her bucket list. As she says it is not for the dying; you can do it anytime. I belong to a group called The Adventurous Babes Society. The group was going to spend the night in a Haunted Hotel in Wilson, KS. I ask Jen if she wanted to join me. She was all excited.

So on a Saturday we drove to Wilson, KS. It is a very small town between Wichita and Hays, KS. They have a hotel called the Midland Railroad Hotel.

You can read the history of the hotel at: Google:

We arrived at Wilson on Saturday by 3 PM. Jennifer couldn’t believe how tiny the town was. We drove around for all of 10 minutes and that was the town; she thanked me for not having raised her in such a tiny town. I found the buildings to have been beautiful at one time. There was a building built in 1889 in midtown. So that was 10 years before the hotel was built.

Above is the Hotel as we found it; below that is the side of the car of the Paranormal investigators that would be with us through the night. The town had a beautiful church and a Czech painted egg, the railroad ran through the middle where the old Sunflower Coal plant had been. Yes, I heard the train coming through town a couple of times in the night.

Of course we found the little store and the liquor store for snacks and drinks before we started doing anything.

We got checked into our room. The whole place was beautiful inside. It was all done in Mission furniture.

This photo hung in our room; it fascinated me as I used to work for the phone company and we used cord boards like this. Below the first two photos are of our room.

Our room was in the new wing that was added after the third floor burnt in 1902 taking 24 lives. They restored it and then added on the newer section. There was a little girl in one of the rooms on the third floor; she has been seen wearing a white dress and looks out the window in the back. There was also a sheriff in room 305 that was found hanged. The stories are mixed up as to the real reason he was hanged. Something happened with his son; and either the towns people hung him or he hanged himself out of sorrow for his son.

Talking to the staff, all of them have experienced things at one time or another. Beds having just been made and when they came out of the bath; the bed was turned down. Items moved and unexplained noises.

2015-06-27 20.59.30

Before our investigation began we gathered outside, this was not everyone. We started at sun down and had lights out shortly after that. We all had dinner downstairs in the “Sample Room” which was where retailers could come through and set up shop for people to see their goods. They have left the name the same. At our appointed time we all went upstairs to the third floor.

First we went into the room the little girl is reported to stay in. They had their monitors all set up and the infra-red cameras set up all over the hotel to map any sounds or movements that were not human. Once the lights went out everyone got every quiet and the “hunt” was on.

Now, I am not going to say I believe the monitor’s or equipment; all I know is what I seen, heard, smelled and felt. I for one am a very sensitive person to the supernatural; having had my own NDE  and encounters with other spirit beings. I was not afraid or worried. However, Jennifer was FREAKED OUT.

I heard the investigators talking to the “spirits” and trying for communication from them. I myself did not see anything. However, it was so hot in the room where everyone was I was standing in the hall way. All of a sudden I smelled a very strong odor of sulfur. One of the investigators was down the hall a bit and I ask him if he smelled it. He said he did and wasn’t it strange that we were on the floor that had burned down. By this time the girls in the bedroom were starting to smell it also.

I was one of the last people to come up to the third floor because I have a lot of trouble with my knees so I straggled behind. No one shut the door to the floor as we went in. Later I was so hot I was going to go sit on the stairs and the door was closed. I went back and ask on the team if they had closed it. They said no and tried, unsuccessfully to get someone to close it again. Nope. Yet, later when I was back around the corner I heard it slam shut again. No one had passed me and they radioed to see if anyone had come up the stairs and no one had.

After everyone had left the little girls room and went downstairs the investigator, my daughter and a lady named Trish were still in the little girls room. They started around the corner to leave and left a teddy bear in the center of the bed. They then left. I was sitting down the stairs a ways and could hear them talking to the little girls. It seemed she had followed them around the hall. The lady was talking to her and after a while she ask her if she could sing a little song. Jennifer said she heard a tiny voice start singing “Ring around the rosy”. And the miter lite up to 5.0 the highest it had been all night. (Jennifer said she wanted to talk to her but was afraid she would follow her home!).

Another investigator (sorry I don’t remember your names) came down the hall from the other way (my friend had been standing in the hall outside the little girls room this whole time, it was so dark you couldn’t see anything), the guy shined his flash light in the room and the teddy bear was face down in front of the door.   Hum did the little girl pick it up and drop it when she followed the three out of the room?

They called the other floors and no one was having much luck finding anything. It seems we seen more action than the other floors. We all went downstairs to go out and across to another building and then to the old jail.  Jennifer said the investigator was trying to get the little girl to follow them down when Trish told the little girl she needed to stay in the hotel; she would be safer there. They had no more readings after that.

We went to a deserted dentist office which to me was just old, dusty and nasty – didn’t feel a thing there. Then we went to the jail – that would not have been a place I would have wanted to have been locked up. Here are photos:

Here is the ball and chains they would be tied up with.

The outside of the jail.

Okay that was our experience. Hey, I didn’t have a problem with any of it. The sulfur smell was strange, the door shutting, the bear being moved. There could have been reasons for all of them with so many people in the house.

HOWEVER, my daughter was still FREAKED out of her mind over the little girl. Now I did not hear that. When we went to bed she ask if I could leave the bathroom light on. Sure not a problem, there were slates in the door so it was dark enough to sleep. I slept like a baby other than being cold and could get the covers comfortable.

Jennifer on the other hand had wanted me to leave ALL the lights on; she didn’t sleep a wink all night. Between 3:00 and 3:30 (the witching hour) she just knew something was going to show its face through the window above our door or worse come inside.

I am not laughing at her (yes I am) but she no longer has any desire to go to a haunted hotel, house or anywhere.

Okay that one is checked off the bucket list…… Love you babe!

Training to Kennel; Estes Park CO

We are trying to get our two dogs to kennel. We would like to be able to take them on trips.

Buster on the top has never been kenneled and he is nine years old.

Nicky on the bottom was kenneled when she was small until she became completely house broken.

Now we are trying to get them to sleep in their kennels. Last night was NOT a good night.

Remember when you brought a new born baby home and he cried endlessly. Yep, that is what happened last night. I got up and yelled at Nicky to be quiet at 2:30 AM; then Buster barked until he almost lost his voice. Finally at 4:00 AM I got up and let them out. They went outside then zoomed to their beds in our bedroom. Not another peep until this morning.

We went and bought another wire kennel for Buster hoping that if he can see out more he might calm down. We will try again tonight. As with a baby, I believe we are in for some long sleepless nights until they are trained again. If you have any tricks please let us know!

We did go on a vacation a few weeks ago. I know, everyone says how can you go on a vacation when you are retired. A vacation is AWAY from home. Somewhere different. We spent our first night in Loveland, CO. Because of the floods of last year the 36 Hywy is not open yet so we had to take 34 Hywy from Loveland.

The next morning when we woke up to leave; someone had backed into my car. The desk clerk saw it happen and took the gentleman in and got his insurance and copy of his driver’s license. The insurance was canceled. Long story short they found him and he says he has new insurance. I pray he does so I can get my $240.00 copay back for having my bumper replaced.

We had a wonderful time. I wanted to see the Elk and got to see many of them. Listening to their bulging for their harem and watching the bulls practice their fighting. It is amazing how they get right in the front yards of houses and walk right down town and into the lake area.

2014-10-08 09.33.04

We drove up into the Rocky Mtn. National Forest Park and got a lot of beautiful shots of mountains and the fall trees. The photo of the orange mountain I caused by the sun rising. I got a beautiful photo when we went to the meadows one morning to see the Elk herds.

My photos are on my laptop and I have not transferred them to my desktop yet.  The photos below are not mine, they are put on Facebook by artist and Estes Park. They say to share them so I have. Makes you want to go up doesn’t it?

We drove to our hotel one day and seen a black bear in broad daylight in the trash can outside our room. He was about 200 lbs. Beautiful. Didn’t get a photo but I wanted to hug him! ha ha

The weekend we went to CO my son and his wife moved to Kansas City. It is really strange to not be able to drive to Park City and see them. We have yet to go see their new home. Wish is why we are trying to get the dogs trained. They have two dogs and two cats. So it would be a pretty full house if they aren’t kennel trained!

Have a great week.

Route 66 to California

A week ago B and I got back from California. We had gone out the prior week to see his family. He had lost his only sister in February and we needed to help go through his sisters, Moms and her parents things. His Nephew was overwhelmed with all the stuff that was there. We had NO idea how much stuff they had until we arrived.

As we drove along you could see parts of the old Route 66 along the highway. We went to OKC and cut across this time, usually we take US 54 all the way down through the corner of OK. We found it a much smoother and easier ride. Four lanes almost all the way baby!

If you look to the right, you will see a red car – he is on the old Route 66. I do not think I would want to travel it today, up and down and rough!

Route 66

We hadn’t made the trip for about 12 years so it was a long trip – we used to drive it straight through or stay overnight one night. We stayed overnight two nights on the way out but only one night coming home. I think we were on auto pilot and ready to get home.

Views along the way

The rock formations were beautiful. Looked like they were placed by God individually.

2014-05-21 07.29.45

The WIND FARMS were awesome they were every where!

2014-05-21 09.32.26

We seen several trains going one way or the other.

Once we arrived we got to see B’s family and for the first time meet their twins. Since I too have twins, a boy and girl; it was special to finally see these too. We hadn’t seen the oldest girl since she was a baby. We enjoyed going to a musical concert her school put on Friday night.  After going through letters we found her musical talent (she has played violin for 5 years) may have come from her dad’s father.

Murrell Family

Once we got into the garage we seen we had our work cut out for us. There were four steamer trunks; one dating back to 1850 which B’s great-grandfather brought over with them from England when they came to America. This photo was taken after they were empty and moved to another Niece’s home. They have a person who will fix them up and sell them, with the proceeds going to Cancer Research.

I would have loved to have brought one home but just didn’t have room. We rented a Rave 4 and had it full on the way back! The one on top is the one from 1850. They were all about that age but didn’t have any proof on the other three like we did on the top one. Following this photo are vintage family photos – with the explanation below them.

Above are some photos we found. We think the girl is LuBelle Whitworth, next is her father J.R. Whitworth, and then LuBelle and Blaine on their wedding day. We have the suit that Blaine has on in this photo. LuBelle and Thomas Blaine Mitchell were married in 1917. We found LOTS of old vintage photos.

My husbands step-sister Iona came over and helped us identify people and we shared and talked for hours while working through the trunks and many huge plastic tubs of stuff.

2014-05-22 15.52.12

B was not looking forward to this trip. Going home after your  Grandparents, dad, mom, and now sister have passed does make it seem lonely. After the trip he was so glad he went.

On Sunday I’s girls (4) and their families had a cook out for us. We had a wonderful time catching up, meeting new mates and kids, the kids and some adults swam. After all it was California.

It was a long way home but we seen Cadillac Ranch and the Christ in stages to the cross.  We didn’t stop we just looked that way. We have seen them on the internet and that was good enough! ha

One place we did find of interest – we didn’t go in but thought I would show it to you – Route 66 Casino,

Hope you enjoyed our trip – I spared you of a lot of photos! ha ha

On the mighty Mississippi River

Barge on Mississippi river

Barge on Mississippi river

On Thursday April 25th my husband, mom and I started our trip to Cape Girardeau MO from Wichita KS. My Aunt and Uncle were going to renew their vows 50 years after the first time they married.

Having never driven to Cape Girardeau myself I used Google maps to find the best way to go. Sometimes the “straightest shot” is not the best. We decided on going up the KS turnpike to KC and then to St Louis and then down to Cape Girardeau. We were able to go around the bottom of both KC and St Louis, leaving Wichita at 8 am and arriving in Cape at 5 pm. On our return trip we reversed and it took the same time. Unfortunately we didn’t have sunshine but one day while there, by that time I was too tired to go out and take more photos.

If you read my prior post you seen that what we thought was to be a small renewal was a totally-full-blown wedding. It was very pretty. I have never seen so much food in my life. The night we arrived my Aunt had tacos prepared for all of us, we had pizza at the hotel the night of rehearsals, then they fed us at the reception, had pulled pork for dinner that night. After Sunday service they had fried chicken, the last night we ate salad with ham and cheese sandwiches. Bob and I went to Cracker Barrel and Ruby Tuesdays, just because we wanted too.

Luke is my Aunts 3 year old great-grandson – he was a pistol. I would love to have some of his energy! He is the cutest little thing. Loved the water in the fountain at the Auburn Palace where we stayed. Threw pennies in every time someone gave him any – he always said “thank you”. Raised in North Carolina he had manners that most 3 years olds don’t. When they ask if he wanted to swim one evening he promptly sat down and started removing his slacks – in the dinning room of the hotel. It was funny.

Luke’s little cousin Abigail, who just turned one year old, was just as precious. She walked on tippy toes with the help of grandpa or daddy. She is a total princess and has them wrapped around her little finger. Adam was the other great grandson and he was very cute but they only came in for the wedding so I didn’t have as much time to interact with him. He will be getting a new brother in about 3 months.

While site seeing we did see the new Casino which everyone is about excited about as if they had put a farm of rattle snakes in town… lol
It was so green and beautiful there. All the bushes and trees where in bloom. One tree had either white or pink flowers on them. I don’t know if they will grow here but I am going to find out.

Okay one more photo of the Bill Emerson bridge that goes from Missouri to Illinois and another of the river. Hope you enjoyed my trip, I sure did!
